Melo triple-double

by Kyle Inman on April 17th, 2012 at 9:46 pm
Posted In: NBA

Carmelo Anthony 35 Pts, 12 Reb, 10 Ast, 2 Stl at MSG against Boston.

Carmelo Anthony recorded his second career triple-double in an amazing performance and a win over the Celtics at Madison Square Garden.

The reason Anthony doesn’t have more triple-doubles under his belt is because in the past he was never as willing of a passer as he is now.  As it turns out, his passing and playmaking skills are top notch.  Melo is playing the best basketball of his career in what started out as the worst season in his career.  Talk about a bounce back almost over night, right when D’Antoni was gone so was the selfish side of No. 7.

Melo went for  35 Pts, 12 Reb, 10 Ast, 2 Stl and it looked like the triple-double was gone when he picked up his fifth foul midway through the fourth quarter, but he came back in with three minutes left and picked up the two assists that he needed.

If Anthony would have played like he has under Woodson all season long then he would be a legitimate MVP candidate along with Kevin Durant and LeBron James.  There hasn’t been a better player in basketball for the last month.

Anthony shot 13-for-24 including 2-for-3 from down town.  The Knicks were on fire as a whole tonight shooting at nearly 60 percent for the game and over 60 from deep.  J.R. Smith and Steve Novak went for 25 points each on a combined 15-for-20 from 3-point distance.

The 76ers lost tonight so that puts the Knicks firmly in place to get the seven seed and take on the Heat in the first round.  LeBron and Wade have their work cut out for them against the surging Knicks if they want to make a championship run.  The Knicks, while hindered by injuries, are getting Amare Stoudemire back towards the end of this week and could be a scary matchup if Anthony can keep playing this style of game even after the missing power forward comes back.

SI Dream League

by Kyle Inman on April 16th, 2012 at 6:33 pm
Posted In: Other

Every Tuesday anticipation is high for the Dream League in Staten Island.

Growing up every kid dreams of what it would feel like to be able to do the things that your favorite player does on the court.  For me it was Michael Jordan, I would go to the driveway for countless hours with the rim lowered, hitting fade away jumpers and throwing down dunks with my tongue out.

99.9% of the population isn’t athletic enough to experience what it feels like to drive the lane and throw down a big dunk in an actual game.  That is unless you’ve taken your talents to play in Staten Island’s Dream League.

The Dream League is ultra competitive basketball that’s played on an eight and a half foot rim with a maximum player height limit of 6-3.  The games are played 4-on-4 to create more space for the high flying acts and to protect players safety.

“Our mission and goal is to give our players the most competitive and professional feeling leagues offered by anyone,” Dream League CEO Dylan Fusco said. “Our leagues our designed for the player giving them a shot to at least have a taste of living the life long dream of every sports lover.”

The league started from Fusco’s childhood inspiration and is in its first season.  After the Dream League released their idea through social media, 12 team spots were filled in less than 24 hours.

Because of the success of this inaugural season, the league will be shifting from 12 teams to a 32-team format in June.  All current teams are from the Staten Island area, but there have been a couple teams that have reached out from New Jersey.

Official stats are kept in the league’s website for every game, which keeps the games intensely competitive, even during blowouts.  The website features write ups about the action and it’s all caught on video.  Players all sign contracts, just like in the NBA, and are subject to be traded at any time.

If you check the stats right now, you will see that Dillon Cassese for the Lakers scored 57 points in one game and grabbed 25 rebounds.  You will also see that Nicky Donato for the Bulls leads the league in triple-doubles with two and double-doubles with seven.

The league is ran by Fusco and coordinators George Quinn and Marco Boshnack with hopes of growth and expansion.

“We hope to run leagues nationally and even globally, possibly even branching to other sports,” Fusco said.

Trouble in Philly

by Kyle Inman on April 14th, 2012 at 2:35 pm
Posted In: NBA

Can Lou Williams score enough points off the bench to keep the 76ers in the playoffs?

If the season ended today, the Philadelphia 76ers would be facing the Bulls as the 8-seed as Philly is tied with the Knicks and New York holds the tie breaker.

Unfortunately for the 76ers, the season doesn’t end today and they are in serious danger of missing the playoffs.  Doug Collins crew has lost 11 out of its last 17 games including losing five of their last seven.

It was the tremendous lock-down team defense that ascended the Sixers into a winning franchise early in the season.  Philly still ranks No. 1 in opponents points per game with 88.3, but it’s up about five points from where it was earlier and the 76ers aren’t defending like they used to.  They let the New Jersey Nets put up 95 on them last night at home, in a crucial game for playoff seeding.  Something has been broken on the defense lately.

It wouldn’t be such a big deal, but the Sixers struggle to score points.  Their leading scorer is Lou Williams off the bench and while he is a nice scoring guard, he isn’t the type of player that is going to carry the scoring load for a franchise as he is only averaging 15.0 points per game.  Jrue Holiday is second on the team in scoring with 13.4 points per game, so the top two scorers for the Sixers are point guards, not good and Holiday isn’t even a scoring guard.

‘Star’ player Andre Iguodala only gets 12.0 points per game and fails to make a real impact on the offensive end if his defense isn’t creating easy buckets for him.  Thad Young will get you about the same production, but is faced with the same offensive limitations.

So now the Sixers have seven games left that includes two matchups with the 3-seed Indiana Pacers and a game against the Milwaukee Bucks in Brew City.  The Bucks are two games back of the Sixers right now and that could be the deciding game for who makes the playoffs and who doesn’t. The Bucks schedule isn’t any easier as they also play Indiana twice and also have a game against the Celtics.

I think that the Sixers are going to fall out of the playoffs and be the first team out after they looked so great defensively through most of this shortened season.  New York and Milwaukee are playing its best basketball as the season is closing while Philly is playing by far its worst of the season.

One and Done

by Kyle Inman on April 13th, 2012 at 4:00 pm
Posted In: College Basketball, NBA

2012 one and done entrants for June 28's loaded NBA Draft.

The one and done rule in college basketball is one of the most talked about and controversial topics.  NBA commissioner David Stern is in favor of a rule that makes players stay in college for three years.  It would be great for the quality of play in college basketball, but really some guys have no business staying that long because of their talent level.

There’s a lot of future potential star talent on this list below, but entering the NBA comes with risks and there’s sure to be at least one or two guys who are going to look back on the decision to turn pro with regret.  Here’s the one and done guys that just finished their true freshman season of college basketball for the stacked 2012 NBA draft.

Brad Beal 6-4 207, shooting guard, Florida – Great decision by Beal to enter the draft.  I think he’s the best shooting guard in this draft with a more complete game than Jeremy Lamb or Austin Rivers.  Led Florida in rebounding at 6.7 per from the guard position and is a very solid on ball defender.  Beautiful jump shooter on the offensive end with great NBA range, averaged 14.4 points per game as a freshman while being the key guy in an elite-8 run.  Beal did what he needed to do at the NCAA level despite going into a system with a good and deep backcourt already in place.  I like the prospect of the Cavs taking him late in the lottery and pairing him up with Kyrie Irving to form a very dangerous young guard duo.  Whoever ends up with Beal is getting a future all-star.

Andre Drummond 6-10 260, center, UConn – The hyped big man averaged 10 points and a team-leading 7.6 rebounds per game this season  while shooting a 53.8% from the field.  Ideally, Drummond could have used another year at UConn to fine tune his skills and learn to develop a better motor.  He’s said to have ‘unlimited potential’ by coach Jim Calhoun and is sure to be selected in the top five.  He had flashes, but just wasn’t as impressive as I expected him to be.  His draft stock is so high that it would have been a foolish move to come back, especially to the disaster that is UConn.  The Huskies are ineligible for post-season play next year.  Drummond could have benefited from more touches in the paint instead of the quick trigger guards in Shabazz Napier, Jeremy Lamb, and Ryan Boatright.  I don’t know what kind of career Drummond will have, but size is a premium in the NBA and the potential to be dominant is there.  UConn’s first one and done player.

Moe Harkless 6-8 205, small forward/shooting guard, St. Johns - Broke Allen Iverson’s record for most points scored in a players first Big East game with 32 points against Providence.  Averaged 15.5 points per game and 8.6 rebounds this season while earning honorable mention all Big East honors.  He can score from the inside or out, although he needs to work on his jumper and perimeter game.  Blows by his defender and gets to the rack with excellent agility for a guy his size.  Although he could use another year to refine his offensive game, Harkless is likely to be a first round pick based on potential.  Needs to add muscle, but is a very good defender.

Austin Rivers 6-4 200, shooting guard, Duke - Doc’s son and his Duke squad was sent him with a disappointing second round exit, but Rivers time at Duke will be remember by a great game-winner 3-pointer against North Carolina.  It’s that kind of clutch scoring ability that has NBA teams ready to take Rivers somewhere in the top 20 of this seasons draft.  At 6-4, he is stuck between the size of a shooting guard and a point guard, but clearly is more comfortable off the ball right now.  He had very good one on one skills and I could see him being a scoring contributor off the bench in year one in the NBA.  As far as becoming a star, I think it will be hard for Austin to create his own shot with the dribble at the next level like he had success with at Duke.  Despite some limitations, Rivers has good enough offensive game to put points on the board at any level.  His jumper is nice, has a good crossover, and can take you to the rim and finish is he needs to.  Averaged 15.4 points per game as a freshman.

Tony Wroten Jr. 6-5 205, point guard, Washington- Wroten averaged 16 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game as a freshman for the Huskies.  Projected to go somewhere in the middle of the first round.  Super athletic combo guard with great size for a lead guard.  Shows great body control, great speed, and a has proven to cause havoc on the defensive end of the ball.  He needs to add some strength.  Could use another year in college, but his physical gifts and potential deem that he is ready to go right now.  Spectacular highlight ability.

The freshmen from UK haven't declared yet, but I would be shocked if any of the three return to school after winning the National Championship.

Anthony Davis, 6-10 210, power forward, UK – The consensus first overall selection is capable of impacting the game in every facet.  His shot blocking skills remind people of Marcus Camby, while his complete game has some, including me, calling him the best big man to come out of college since Tim Duncan.  Could stand to add a little strength, but there is no ceiling on how good Davis will be at the next level.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, 6-7 228, small forward, UK – I think Gilchrist will be the second player chosen in the draft.  He has the skills on both sides of the ball to be an immediate impact player.  Will be one of the best defenders at his position in the NBA right away.  Does all the little things right and is mature beyond his years.  There are no real holes in his game and his body is ready for the big leagues.  Future star.

Marquis Teague, 6-2 190, point guard, UK – No players stock rose more from the beginning of the season until now than Teague.  His decision making and turnovers were questioned early in the season and he did a complete 180, turning his weakness into a strength.  He proved to be a championship caliber point guard and leader.  Has all the athletic tools to be very good at the next level and his improvement over the season has his stock higher than its ever been.

The Razor

by Kyle Inman on April 12th, 2012 at 4:24 pm
Posted In: NBA

Rajon Rondo leads the NBA in triple-doubles and assists. His recent play has the Celtics ready to compete for a championship.

Rajon Rondo is has been playing out of his mind lately and his amazing passing skills are the major reason why the Celtics have morphed into a serious contender to win the East late in the season.

Rondo notched his league-leading sixth triple-double of the season last night with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 20 assists.  He’s racked up at least 10 assists or more in 19 straight games, the longest streak in 20 years.

In the Celtics last 10 games, Rondo is averaging 14.3 assists.  He averages a NBA-leading 11.4 assists per game, ahead of Steve Nash who is in second with 11.1.  The next closest player is Chris Paul with 8.9.  Rondo is clearly the elite distributor in all of basketball.

During his amazing streak of 19-straight double digit dime games, Rondo has racked up the following assist numbers: 10,10 14, 12, 13, 16, 14, 17, 11, 13, 14, 17, 14, 11, 12, 12, 15, 15, 20.  That is simply amazing playmaking and Danny Ainge has to feel a little stupid about dangling him as trade bait early in the season and during the off-season.  Rondo is the premier distributor in all of basketball.

The Celtics are 17-7 since the beginning of February.  If Rondo is the quarterback, then Paul Pierce is his main deep threat as the Truth is averaging 19.2 points per game and is still one of the toughest one-on-one matchups in basketball despite being 34-years-old.  Kevin Garnett has stepped his play up recently with his move to the center position and has Rondo to thank for countless easy buckets.

The Celtics are a dangerous team and I feel like if Jeff Green wouldn’t have gotten hurt before the season, they would stand a lot better chance to win the East.  I think this team is almost unbeatable with a home court advantage, but will fall against Miami or Chicago on the road.  I don’t think they will win the East, but I can’t count them out. After all, these guys know what it takes to win a championship.

Rondo ranks as one of the best point guards in basketball. People talk about Deron Williams, Derrick Rose, and Chris Paul because of their complete games, but neither of the three play as good of defense and sets up teammates as well as Rondo.  The only thing holding Rondo back from being the best is his broken jumper and inability to hit free-throws.

8-Seed

by Kyle Inman on April 11th, 2012 at 2:22 pm
Posted In: NBA

The Knicks and the Bucks square off in the most important game of this NBA season. The winner has the inside track on the 8-seed and the loser might be going home early.

The Knicks and the Bucks will square off tonight in Milwaukee in the battle for the eighth and final seed in the 2012 playoffs.  This is a must-win game for both teams.  It’s nearly win or go home.

Each team only has eight games left after tonight’s showdown.  The Bucks sit a 28-29 while the Knicks are a game up at 29-28.  A win tonight for the Bucks would tie things up and give them the inside track as they hold the tie breaker.

Milwaukee has won six out of their last eight games despite a loss to the Thunder the last time out.  The Knicks have won six out of nine despite a loss in Chicago the last time out.  Both teams are playing well and the recent history gives the Bucks an advantage in Milwaukee.  The Knicks have bad recent history in Milwaukee, where they have lost four straight, including a loss in which NewYork allowed 119 points last month.

The Knicks will have to deal with the dual threat of Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings in the backcourt.  I imagine that Jennings will have a field day with Baron Davis chasing him around.  Iman Shumpert is going to have to lock down whichever player gets hot and Mike Woodson will have to take his chances that one of them will be cold.  They must keep Drew Gooden and Ersan Illyasova from dominating in the paint, that’s where Tyson Chandler comes in.

New York will simply need another great game from Carmelo Anthony.  Averaging over 30 points per game and showing improved passing skills and increased effort on defense, Anthony has been one of the best players in basketball for the last month.  I think he feels a sense of urgency as the rest of the team should as well.  On the road or not, everybody on both sides know that this is the game that could seal their teams fate.

Even if Carmelo goes of for 40+ like the other night against Chicago, the Knicks are desperate for some scoring outside of Anthony.  J.R. Smith is a prime candidate.  When Smith gets hot the Knicks are hard to beat and when he is cold, all his bricks are no different than turnovers.  Shumpert, Fields, Smith, Chandler, Davis, somebody has to step up and have a game where they score in double figures and hit a high percentage of their shots to win.

I believe that the Knicks defense is good enough to get the road win.  I am expecting a great, borderline magical performance out of Anthony.  Surely he will be double and triple teamed.  If the Bucks get hot, New York doesn’t have enough offense to stay in the game, so the tone has to be set early on the defensive side of the ball.

No matter which way it goes, tonight in Brew City is sure to be playoff caliber basketball and a rare truly meaningful game on the NBA’s regular season schedule.  There’s still a chance that the 76ers drop out and both of these teams make the playoffs, but I wouldn’t count on it as Philly’s schedule is extremely easy from here on out.

Done in Dallas

by Kyle Inman on April 9th, 2012 at 4:16 pm
Posted In: NBA

Lamar Odom's heart was still in L.A. after being traded to the Mavs. The result was uninspired play and being stuck on the inactive list for the rest of the season. What's next?

Lamar Odom’s short lived stint with the Mavericks was marred by sub-par, uninspired play, and career lows in every statistical category.  Odom appears to be done in Dallas after the Mavs placed him on the inactive list for the rest of the season.

Odom will probably be traded or more likely bought out after the season.  He was at his best during his seven year stint with the Lakers which included winning back-to-back championships.  He also won the Sixth Man of the Year award just last season.

Versatility was the key to Odom being an effective player on the court.  He was able to initiate the triangle offense and play the point-forward position as the Lakers lacked a decent point guard outside of Derek Fisher.  He’s 6-10 and can shoot and handle the ball, which is why I think he will find a place to play next season.

I could see him going back to the Lakers or back to Miami and will probably be able to be had at a discount for a contender after the series of events that transpired in Dallas this season.  His track record and resume are too strong for teams not to want to sign him.  Add in wife Khloe and whichever team he goes to can be sure they will get some free press.

There is really no other player in the league that can bring the versatility that Lamar brings to the floor and is willing to come off the bench.  That being said, nobody is going to forget that he basically quit on the Dallas Mavs.  Whichever team trades for him or signs him is going to have to know he has a fragile personality and make damn sure that he wants to be there.  I think a trade scenario would be too risky and no team would bite after the way this last one worked out.  The best case would be for Odom to have the freedom to choose where he wants to sign and that appears to be what’s going to happen.

I’m positive he wants to play for a contender so I wouldn’t expect him at 32-years-old to be getting any kind of big payday.  He should just focus on contributing as much as he can for the rest of his career and forget about all the extra curricular things.  This break could be a good thing for him to get his focus and passion back while working all off-season to get his conditioning right because it was wrong in Dallas.  It was ridiculous for L.A. to trade him after the season he had last year, but that’s how the game works.  Don’t trust the Lakers, they will trade anybody.
