A day after Bruce Webber was fired from Illinois for falling to Iowa in the first round of the Big 10 Tournament in Chicago, Tom Izzo showed the world what a good team is supposed to do against 17-16 Iowa in March by hanging a 92-75 victory behind the strong play of 6-7 burly senior Draymond Green.
Green has been to two final fours in his Michigan State career, he’s the guy with the experience and leads the team in Points at 16 and rebounds at 10 per game on the year. Keith Appling is second on the team in scoring with 11.5 points per game, these two form a dangerous inside out combination that has steam rolled Sparty to 25-7 on the season.
The line today for Green was 21 Pts, 10 Reb, 5 Ast, 1 Stl, 3 Blk. This was not a huge surprise as Green has manhandled the Hawkeyes, scoring 64 points and cleaning the glass for 34 rebounds in two schools last three games together.
Green leads the nation with today’s game as it was his sixth game of the season with at least 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists. He’s been on a scorching hot streak in the last month, going for 20, 20, 17, 20, 29, and 19 in his last six games. This is no surprise as Izzo, being the great coach that he is, always has Michigan State playing its best basketball at this time of year in preparation for a national tournament run.
Today also marked Green’s 18th double-double of the season. 6-10 Sophomore Center Adreian Payne had a very nice game, going 7-for-8 from the field and scoring 16 points and pulling down 7 rebounds. Appling went for 12 points on a very efficient 3-for-3 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line to go with 6 assists and 3 rebounds.
Michigan State will take on the winner of Wisconsin and Indiana and I’m picking them to play Ohio State in the conference tournament championship game. Sullinger vs Green will be must see tv.
